Introduction

Hey everyone, not sure what to start out with, so here goes nothing. My name is Kelsey; I am married to the military. Although not literally, it feels like it sometimes. My husband, Matt, has been in The North Dakota Army National Guard since he was 17 years old. We were both 20 years old when we were married and he was 3 months shy of leaving for his first year long mission. Now, a year after he returned home, he has signed up for The United States Army. When we first met, he told me that was his plan, which scared the bejesus out of me- thinking I don't want to leave my family, my town, my life!!! After he explained to me why this was important to him and of course after falling in love with him and realizing I couldn't live the rest of my life without him, I started to do the research to see just what it would be like to be an "Army wife". After hours of struggling to find information about military life, I found myself more confused than when I had started. Problem was, there wasn't a specific place where I could go to talk to other wives or soldiers to get those answers. There was either conflicting information on one topic or there wasn't any information at all on another. Now, I would like to share the information I have learned along the way and I hope that you will share your experiences and knowledge with me!

Update on NATO Helecopter Attack by Taliban

Here is an article from TheLedger.com :
WASHINGTON | International forces killed the Taliban insurgents responsible for shooting down a U.S. helicopter and killing 38 U.S. and Afghan forces over the weekend, but they are still seeking the top insurgent leader they were going after in Saturday's mission, the top American commander in Afghanistan said today.

Marine Corps Gen. John Allen told a Pentagon news conference that an F-16 airstrike Monday took out fewer than 10 insurgents involved in the attack on the Chinook helicopter.

In a separate statement today, the military said the Monday strike killed Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who fired the rocket-propelled grenade at the helicopter. The military said intelligence gained on the ground provided a high degree of confidence that the insurgent who fired the grenade was the person killed. It did not provide further details.

NATO Helicopter Shot Down

So I have been meaning to post this, but haven't had a chance. Just wanted to send my heart and prayers to the friends and families of the soldiers who lost their lives in the recent Taliban attack on a NATO helicopter.

I have copied and pasted the article I found on abc News/ International :

A helicopter was shot down today by Afghan insurgents as it was rushing to aid troops in a firefight, killing 30 Americans, including 22 Navy SEALs, most of whom belonged to Team 6, the unit whose members were involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said.
The Chinook helicopter was carrying a quick-reaction force to provide back-up to the troops on the ground in the eastern Afghan province of Wardak, a U.S. official said. After the crash, the forces that were involved in the firefight "broke contact" with the enemy so they could go provide perimeter security for the crash site, the official said.
Additional forces were then sent to secure the crash site.
It's unclear how far away the helicopter was from the initial firefight when it went down and unclear how the troops in the firefight got to the crash location, the official said.

Amazon Ships to APO, FPO and DPO Addresses!

I found this information directly on the Amazon Help Pages.

Helpful Hints for ordering from Amazon and shipping to APO, FPO, or DPO Addresses:

Most items can be shipped to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, except:
  • cell phones and service
  • computers
  • furniture
  • outdoor living items
  • Target@Amazon.com items
Additionally, some apparel, baby, camera and photo, electronics, health and personal care, housewares, jewelry, software, sports, and tools and hardware items cannot be shipped to APO, FPO, or DPO addresses. An error message will appear at checkout if you enter an APO, FPO, or DPO address and the item isn't eligible to be shipped to that address. Check the item's product detail page for eligibility.

Need help entering the shipping address?
  • City field: Enter "APO,"FPO," or "DPO."
  • State/Province/Region field: Enter the two-letter code for the region where the recipient is stationed. Typically, but not always, the code is "AE" for recipients stationed in Europe, Canada, Africa, or the Middle East; "AA" for recipients stationed in the Americas; and "AP" for recipients stationed in Asia or the Pacific.
  • Country field: Always select "United States" from the drop-down menu regardless of where the recipient is stationed.

Following these steps will ensure that you're charged the correct shipping amount and that your order will be delivered in a timely fashion. All shipments to APO, FPO, DPO addresses are sent via U.S. Priority or First Class Mail. We estimate 5 to 7 business days for delivery once the order has been shipped; however, some destinations may take up to 21 days.

Job/Career Options for the Spouse

Q: What will I do on base/post, are there jobs for me?

A: Of course! There are plenty of options, Here's a few basic options, I will add more specifics later in another post:
  • Work from Home- many companies are having work from home associates now, usually the major stipulation is that you have to live in the same state as the company you work for. (Not the same city though, which is nice especially if you live on base, then you wouldn't have to drive off base everyday!)
  • Jobs on Base/Post- from working as a nurse/doctor or in the pharmacy at the base clinic or hospital to working at the commissary or base exchange or the movie theater. There are plenty of options on base/post.
  • Jobs off Base/Post- again plenty of options should be available to you in the town/city off base/post. So don't limit yourself, it's usually not too long of a drive into the city to work at the flower shop or hospital, etc.
  • Want to Zone in on a Specific Career? No problem, there are many colleges that offer online classes to help you reach your career goal and still go about your busy military lifestyles!

Save Time and Money with USPS to Ship Them Goodies!

So, I read online somewhere from another military wife that the post office offers free packaging supplies like boxes, labels, tape, and packing materials. They even mail it to your door!! While I have not done this myself, she said that you just call 1-800-610-8734; hit 1, then 1 again, then hit 2 to request your "military pack". She said they also provide an identification number for reorders. My hubby isn't currently overseas or away at training, so I don't need any of these supplies at this time, but I might just call and request the pack and keep it for later to let you know if it's worth your time!
